Sheffield Hallam University has been awarded substantial funding by the European Regional Development Fund to create the Sheffield Testing Imaging and Characterisation Centre. Sheffield Hallam University requires a 3D surface scanning system designed specifically for surface guided radiotherapy (SGRT) for the College of Health, Wellbeing and Life Sciences (HWLS). The equipment will be used within the Allied Health Department specifically within the Radiotherapy and Oncology team which is one of the largest providers of Radiotherapy and Oncology education in the UK. The project is receiving funding from the England European Regional Development Fund as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020. The Northern Powerhouse is a key aspect of this Government's approach to addressing the productivity gap in the North and ensuring a stronger, more sustainable economy for all parts of the UK. Alongside over EUR 1.5 billion of European Regional Development Fund support for businesses and communities across the North, the government has awarded £3.4 billion in three rounds of Growth Deals across the Northern Powerhouse. The equipment will be used to support research, undergraduate training, continuing professional development of qualified therapeutic radiographers and contract activity for local clinical services (private and NHS) for patients suffering from trunk lymphoedema following treatment for breast cancer. The 3D surface scanner will have the capability to track and quantify changes in body (size and shape). It will be able to be utilized by health agencies and local private sector providers, small private physiotherapy clinics, weight loss services, medical device manufacturers and private healthcare radiotherapy centres for research and development. The benefits/likely outcomes are: 'Image guided therapy' to provide an improved more efficient product and/or service. The medium to longer term objectives, year 2 onwards, include work with business and academic partners to as well as companies such as Panache Lingerie in Sheffield who we already partner with or clinical services such as the lymphiedema clinics, radiotherapy equipment specialists. • develop new materials, products and components: improve existing products and processes; and increase performance and market opportunities for companies through improved product life, longevity, durability, usability and/or enhanced functionality. For example, the creation of more sustainable materials through the use of conductive material or ability to function in extreme environments; • Increase competitiveness of UK and SCR companies in priority sectors, including manufacturing, health care technologies and devices; • increase the number of small and medium sized enterprises engaged in knowledge exchange and collaboration; • improve the commercialisation and market entry of new or enhanced products or services including by small and medium sized enterprises; • increase investment in research and innovation, including by small and medium sized enterprises. The equipment is supporting the research activity of two research projects; The SuPPORT 4 All study and The Respire study. In addition, the equipment will support teaching relating to radiotherapy set up verification, simulated practice of patient positioning. This tender is for a 3D surface scanner system specifically for radiotherapy positioning and set-up and the required environment for the scanner in 1 specialist room based that will also contain a linear accelerator (linac) bed and wall and ceiling mounted positional lasers at the University; the linac bed and positional lasers are not part of this tender.
